Alix Page Reflects on “Automatic” Behaviors
“Automatic” is the newest release from rising star Alix Page and I'm already obsessed with it. Melancholic and honest, Page reflects on how her relationships seem to fail automatically.
An acoustic guitar starts the song with Page's voice coming in strong.
“If I show up // Is that enough //I fucked up I know it’s all my fault.”
Repetition is a common theme throughout the song with its repeating lyrics and whispery echoes that work to drive home the idea that Page's behavior is repeating. Background vocals hauntingly echo around the lyrics “it’s all my fault,” underscoring the guilt and responsibility Page feels for the undoing of a relationship.
Switching up the instrumental, Page changes between acoustic guitar and moments where the instrumental becomes charged with drums, electric guitar, and more background vocals. The change reflects the emotional conflict that Page is dealing with, having to fight against not wanting to just “be your friend” but knowing that this person will end up regretting her.
Page confesses plaintively in the chorus.
“I bet I’d do it again and again and again // And I’d fuck with your head // In the end// You’d regret // That you let me back in."
After an eventful 2022 with the release of her EP Old News and opening for Gracie Abrams on tour, "Automatic" gives us our first look at Alix Page in 2023. Along with the single comes Page's first headlining tour. Check out tour dates here.
