Lexi Jayde Releases “what’s the matter with you”

Following her second EP, Lexi Jayde just released her new single “what’s the matter with you”.

Cowritten and produced by FINNEAS, the track is upbeat while maintaining an air of vulnerability. Reflective and brooding, Jayde sings about being afraid to fall in love again. Despite the subject being “such a gentleman”, Jayde defends her unwillingness to fall by singing “I told you I don’t have the time to fall in love again”.

The start of the song plunks you down into the middle of the story. Girl has already met boy and gotten the feels. Developing crush-like habits of looking away and trying to bite her tongue, Jayde sees her love interest as a threat to her status quo.
“I think you might be giving me the feeling I've been running from.”

The verses’ vocals are almost straight laced with a sense of restraint that comes through Jayde’s voice. The pre chorus takes us to a buildup where we hear Jayde go from not wanting to fall to almost begrudgingly giving in to what’s happening as he caresses her face.

We’re taken to the chorus and hit with “what’s the matter with you”. Sung in a drawn out way, it unleashes Jayde’s frustration. There’s a bit of ambiguity here that I love. The line can be seen as an exasperation at either herself, the love interest, or both. The guy may be a total gentleman, but he’s ruining her plans by making her fall in love when she told him she doesn’t have time. She could also be mad at herself for falling when she didn’t plan to.

A music video directed by Connor Brashier accompanied the song’s release and serves as a visual representation of the theme.

Seeing double, we watch Jayde sing as she watches herself develop a relationship with her love interest. Most of the scenes are light and airy and show the relationship progressing. On the flip side, dark lit scenes represent Jayde’s fear of falling again. At the end of the video, we see Jayde hugging her double as her love interest watches from the window and walks away. It’s open ended, but I take that as a sign of Jayde wanting to love herself before someone else.

“what’s the matter with you” is a scream in your room, roll down your car windows song. It’s an absolute smash for anyone who’s ever even remotely felt the emotions that Jayde touches on.

Lexi Jayde is definitely someone to watch. She’s going on tour starting this month so get tickets if you can!
