Lindsey Lomis "Universe" Is One You Won't Want To Leave
The Universe tour came to New York this week as Lindsey Lomis performed at the Mercury Lounge.
The Nashville singer released her fourth EP entitled Universe this past year with the five-track EP that brings soul, jazz, and rock inspirations to the pop world. Proving she’s a powerhouse, Universe shows off Lomis’ versatile vocal range, incredible riffs, and heartfelt lyrics that have become her trademark.
A sold-out Mercury Lounge awaited Lomis as she raced through the crowd to leap on stage. Kicking off the night with the song "Bones," the crowd was eager to sing along with Lomis as she moved around on stage.
After the first two tracks, Lomis moved into material from the Universe EP. Explaining the meaning behind her next song, Lomis described it as being “scared to break someone’s heart who doesn’t deserve it,” before playing “This Time (I Don’t Wanna).” Starting with an acoustic guitar, the track builds on the idea that staying vulnerable with someone can be scary.
Lomis continued the night, showing off her soulful side with the addictive “call me when u get home” off her Daydreaming EP.
Treating the crowd to unreleased tracks, Lomis followed with a song called "Outta Sight" and another called “Don’t Make Me Fall in Love” that she mashed up with Taylor Swift’s “Anti Hero.”
Fans were delighted with Lomis' mashup. She followed up with another, blending her track “Simple Love” with Bill Withers’ “Just The Two of Us” for a jazzy vibe.
Trading her electric guitar for an acoustic, Lomis plucked the intro to “Kenny.” Raw and vulnerable, Lomis’ vocals stand out from the acoustic track. “Kenny” sees her talking about someone who has had a large impact on her life and who she still thinks of plenty. We all have our own Kennys with people who have touched our lives in ways they might not recognize.
Songwriting is Lomis’ talent, as she connects with people with her incredible lyrics. Initially writing “We Go Down Together,” the song was passed on to Dove Cameron and Khalid. Bringing opener Maxwell Luke up for a duet, Lomis gave the crowd the opportunity to hear her words sung by herself.
In addition to songwriting and singing, Lomis is an outstanding guitar player. It was amazing to see her perform "Bad News / Good News" live and sing simultaneously.
Calling it her “sassiest song ever” and referring to it as her “stomp song,” Lomis got the crowd to suggest an alter ego for the piece. "Linslay" was born for the saucy track.
Lomis' vocals sizzle on top of a hypnotizing guitar riff that loops around. “Don’t worry about her, I’m not sour,” Lomis sings before the chorus kicks in. Playing with rhythms and layers, Lomis introduces a new vibe as she sings “I hope she was bad for you.”
Connecting with the crowd, Lomis danced around on stage, reaching out to hold fans’ hands and sing with them. Incredibly, someone brought a Nintendo DS to the show to take photos. Lomis was so amazed, she took the DS to snap selfies of her and her bandmates. Before giving the crowd another unreleased song “Handle With Care,” Lomis also came down to the crowd to take a picture for someone’s TikTok.
Ramping up the energy, Lomis launched into “Save Your Breath,” getting the crowd jumping for the upbeat tune before slowing it down with “die with my friends.” Flashlights lit up for the sentimental song as everyone embraced their friends and swayed together.
Keeping the night alive, Lomis returned for an encore in an outfit change, switching to a sparkly blazer. Sparkly beach balls were released into the crowd as Lomis launched into her EP's title track “Universe.” Featuring a punchy bassline, the song addresses if a moment is a coincidence or if the universe is telling you something.
The final song of the night was the groovy “Seven Days.” Beginning with an acoustic guitar, Lomis stopped playing halfway through to build suspense. Taking the time to remove her guitar and straighten her clothes, Lomis got laughs from the crowd as they waited for her to resume the track. Cued by a fan yelling "slay," Lomis launched into the final chorus. As the last track on the Universe EP, it was a fitting end to the magical night.
Lindsey Lomis' “Universe" is one I want to stay in. The talented singer-songwriter blends jazz, rock, and soul into a masterpiece that showcases her range. Unreleased tunes from the night show that Lomis has more in store. Keep an eye out for Lindsey Lomis and what she's got in store.
