beabadoobee Says That’s “the way things go”
Since last year’s sophomore album Beatopia, beabadoobee has been busy. The singer has toured the UK, scored her first solo UK Top 40 hit with “Glue Song” in March, and opened a few dates for Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour.
Today, beabadoobee finally dropped the long-teased-on-TikTok “the way things go.” The cute but cutting song sees Bea accepting that when a relationship falls apart. “And there’s too much on my mind / That I don’t even want to try / Guess it’s not far from the ordinary,” she sings. “They do say love is blind / But I guess that’s the way things go.”
Despite the relationship's downfall culminating in Bea's subject "getting with the only girl you know," Bea remains calm and steady, accepting that "oh, I guess that's just the way things go."
The melancholic acoustic number quickly becomes enveloped by ornate orchestration, producing a sense of elegant grace and acceptance. In the end, the passage of time heals as Bea proves that "I'm happy now, I ought to let you know."
Accompanied by a Jacob Erland-directed music video, a cast of ballerinas dance around Bea in an ornate Victorian-era parlor room featuring candelabras, gilded frames, flowers, oil paintings, and dollhouses, adding to the classical sense the song invokes. It feels like a classic acoustic ballad reimagined for the modern world with a sense of intimacy and nostalgic melodies reminiscent of the 1960s.
