benches Bring “Bench Rock” to NYC

Southern California indie rock group benches are making waves. Formed in 2014, vocalist Anson Kelley, drummer Ethan Bowers, lead guitarist Evan Ojeda, and bassist Charlie Baird have steadily cultivated a devoted fanbase. Pioneers of their unique subgenre dubbed as “bench rock,” the group’s sound blends 90’s Britpop with 2000’s NY rock. Their music celebrates youthful naivety while confronting the fears and excitement of getting older. With songs that are a mix of excitement and anxiety, benches’ nostalgic sound is imbued with an infectiously bittersweet quality.

With earlier hits like "Angry Lizard Noise" and "Monodrama" paving the way, benches have continued to release singles. Currently on tour opening for IDKHow, the band has proven that “bench rock” is gaining momentum.

Catching their show at NYC's Irving Plaza, despite the rainy weather the venue was full for their opening set. Coming on stage to cheers, the drum beat to their opening song, “Naive,” kicked off their set. An anthem for love lost, the cathartic chorus offers a release for turmoiled emotions.

benches showcased a mix of older and newer material. They transitioned seamlessly from songs like "Common Sense" from their 2019 album Wishful Thinking (At Its Best) to crowd favorites like "LA Friends" and the explosive "Crash," where Anson Kelley's vocals conveyed raw, pleading emotion.

The onstage chemistry among the band members is palpable, reflecting the tight bond between Anson, Charlie, Evan, and Ethan. With a decade of playing together, the group's camaraderie manifests in an electrifying performance.

benches also treated the crowd to an unreleased song, providing a glimpse into what awaits with their sophomore album slated for release in 2024. With a tantalizing taste of "Naive" and the allure of their unreleased material, anticipation for the album is high.

Closing the night with fan favorites such as "It Doesn't Have To Change," "Monodrama," and "Violent," benches bid farewell to the audience.
