Live: Aidan Bissett is a “Supernova”
Aidan Bissett is a rising star in the music world.
The singer-songwriter started sharing his music by posting videos on TikTok, gaining traction with his single “Different.” A handful of songs and several videos later, 2021 saw Bissett's first EP More Than Friends. Following his success, 2022 saw his I’m Alright If You’re Ok EP. Along his musical journey, Bissett has toured with Claire Rosinkranz, ROLE MODEL, Valley, and others. 2023 has brought his third EP, Supernova, and a headline tour.
A singer-songwriter with a self-effacing sense of humor and vibe that screams chill, Bissett defies genre categorization. Inhabiting the space between indie rock and pop, Bissett has carved out a niche for his songs to dwell. In the murky territory of being a young adult, the 21-year-old artist infuses his musical style with coming-of-age experiences.
From heartbreak and self-discovery to resilience and hope, Bissett lays it all out in the seven tracks of Supernova. Rooted in rock and indie, his music strikes a delicate balance between the raw authenticity of rock and the catchy allure of pop. Soft, casual, and heartfelt lyrics push and pull with compelling guitar lines and catchy melodies that prevent Bissett from becoming trite. Bissett's authenticity and honesty strike deeper, creating compelling narratives through a rich sonic tapestry.
One of Bissett's defining features is his melodic guitar lines, establishing a signature sound that is instantly recognizable. His unique sonic identity makes his riffs instantly identifiable as being the sound of Aidan Bissett.
The Supernova tour brought Bissett to NYC this past week for a show at Racket. As people packed in, the anticipation was palpable. Fans were eager to see opener Anna Shoemaker, who blew them away with her incredible performance. As Bissett took the spotlight with his band, the crowd roared with excitement.
Opening with “All That I’m Craving,” the crowd was immediately singing along and cheering Bissett on. Despite a hiccup with Bissett singing the wrong lyrics in the middle, like a seasoned performer, he recovered quickly, laughing it off. The setlist for the night had all new Supernova songs interspersed with previous releases like "Dumped" and "Grocery Store Girl." Keeping things fresh, Bissett treated the audience to an unreleased track called “Planet,” which judging by the audience's reactions, is set to be a fan favorite.
It is a joy to watch Bissett perform. Alternating between rocking on guitar and singing his heart out, Bissett has an undeniable stage presence. Possessing a rich and soulful tone, he effortlessly transitions from gentle, introspective croons like on “Bloom” to soaring, powerhouse vocals on songs like “How’s It Gonna End?” and “Sick.” His voice evokes a range of emotions, leaving an impression on all. Bissett gives his all during his performance, leaving it all on the stage. He gets lost in the music, occasionally breaking into air guitar solos during epic riffs. It’s clear that he loves what he does.
Bissett is only beginning his supernova rise. A force to be reckoned with, Aidan Bissett is not one to be overlooked.
