Mia Simone’s “BETTER SOMEHOW”
Singer songwriter Mia Simone recently released “BETTER SOMEHOW”. Written during quarantine, Simone notes on Instagram that “During that time I had this constant anxiety with me, but creating this song was so therapeutic.” The song is about how anxiety can “hijack your mind”, but knowing that there is a “light at the end of the tunnel”.
The cover art perfectly illustrates the idea behind the song. Featuring a double exposure of Simone, the cover art emphasizes a sense of turbulent anxiety.
Ambient wave-like sounds start the song before a guitar comes in accompanied by background vocals. When Simone starts singing, everything but the guitar cuts out. The light instrumentation in this song leaves the focus on Simone’s voice and her lyrics. “Behind my eyes is my mind over analyzing”.
The guitar steadily increases in strength and other instrumentation subtly joins the mix to create a larger backing for Simone's voice to open up in the chorus. Despite being “scared of breaking down”, Simone does not let anxiety get the best of her. Singing“I'll feel better somehow”, Simone stays true to her message that even though it may not seem like it in the moment, light is at the end of the tunnel.
The bridge of this song acts as a transition, bringing the listener back to the ambient space in the beginning of the song before traveling to the final chorus to tie everything together. Simone fills out the space by adding background vocals and chords with heavier instrumentation. A guitar solo that carries the song to the finish line. Simone’s last words are a comfort to anyone experiencing anxiety “I'll feel better somehow”.
