Live: No Suits Bring Their No-Suits Groove to Brooklyn

“For us no suits is about creating our own lane and rejecting the idea of conformity. We have nothing against suits as an article of clothing, but our philosophy is to not follow the suit mentality.” This is the ethos of No Suits.

Made up of Max Pierro, Sajan Sanghvi, and Reed Hallums, No Suits lies somewhere in the middle of the spectrum between band and production group. Seamlessly mixing psychedelic rock with rap and hip hop, No Suits’ sound is straight up groovy.

Releasing music since 2016, the band’s style and sound has evolved. Their latest EP Sex reflects the band’s maturing into their own selves. “Sue” leads the EP, telling a tale of the stresses of the early stages of a relationship. It sets the tone for a collection of tracks that are provocative and hot, yet lighthearted and laidback.

No Suits brought their no-suits vibe to Brooklyn this week at Baby’s All Right on their Escalades & Sexcapades tour. Bringing their Cali energy to the East Coast for the first time, the group got a warm welcome from an eager crowd.  “When I say No, you say Suits,” Max yelled out multiple times to a crowd that was all too happy to participate.

Seeing No Suits live is fun. As No Suits kicked off the night with “Sage Genesis” the crowd was already moving. With steady drums, groovy bass, and delicious guitar lines, you can’t help but dance to their music. “Boat to Bermuda” got the crowd fired up with people yelling out the lyrics in the chorus:

“One for the folks in the town that I grew up

Two for the ones that are hopin' I screw up

Three for the kids in the jungle I'm from

On the humble, now I'm on a boat to Bermuda.”

Inspired by a slew of artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Tame Impala , No Suits paid homage to one of their favorites and covered Mac Miller’s “What’s the Use” in their set.

While No Suits brings a no suits vibe, their music is still sincere. Halfway through the set, the guys toned down the energy with “Florida Water.” A song about not wanting to find out it’s all in your head when you die, the song strikes a more somber chord than some of the group’s other tracks.

Not keeping the vibe down for too long, No Suits fired the energy back up, getting the crowd moving. With keys, bass, guitar, and drums all in sync, the group’s energy on stage was tight. No Suits fills some of their tracks with musical interludes, letting you take in the groove. “William Foe” has an interlude that had the crowd collectively making a stank face when the guitarist Reed sat on the edge of the stage to add some sauce with his guitar.

Closing off the night with “3 Wishes”, No Suits didn’t even make it off the stage before calls for “one more song” brought them back. Going out with a bang, the group finished the night up with “Sue.”

Stay tuned to No Suits and check out their debut album dropping 8/25
