boygenius is Back!

Boygenius is back! After taking the world by storm with their self-titled EP back in 2018, the supergroup composed of Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus is back with their upcoming debut LP called the record set to release on March 31.

The 2018 self titled-EP came together with each member bringing in their own songs and helping each other finish them off, creating unique blends that center around each of their styles.

Since their release in 2018, the supergroup has been relatively quiet, only appearing on Haley Williams’ solo Petals for Armor and lending their voices on Baker’s 2021 song “Favor”.

…Until now. In addition to an album announcement, Boygenius has three songs off the 12-song tracklist now available: “$20”, “Emily I’m Sorry”, and “True Blue”.

So far, the 2023 record seems to follow the 2018 path of particular songs centering on a specific member while the others balance and round out the tracks.

“$20” is led by Julien Baker and sounds more upbeat than your average boygenius song. Buzzy guitars and snappy percussion are at the forefront as Baker's vocals ring out. “It’s a bad idea and I’m all about it,” she sings, but then changes her mind. “When you wake up/ I’ll be gone again.”

Phoebe Bridgers slows the pace on “Emily I’m Sorry." Muted guitar softly envelops her voice as she pleads, “Emily, I’m sorry/ I just make it up as I go along/ I can feel myself becoming someone only you could want.”

Lastly, “True Blue,” features dreamy guitar paired with marching band drums that set the scene for Dacus's vocals. In the chorus, she boasts “It feels good to be known so well."
