Gracie Abrams Questions What’s Next with “Where do we go now?”
“Where do we go now?” is the first look at Gracie Abrams’ forthcoming debut album Good Riddance, set to release February 24. Collaborating with Aaron Dessner at his Long Pond Studio in New York, the singer-songwriter looked at creating the song as an exercise in growing up.
“I feel an unbelievable amount of gratitude for the opportunity to have made this album,” the 23-year-old wrote. “Writing this record allowed me to grow up in ways I need to. It forced me to reflect and be accountable. It allowed me to walk away from versions of myself that I no longer recognized. It allowed me to let go.”
Reflecting on the past, Abrams reflects on fading connections. Baring her emotions and laying all her cards out, the singer is left uncertain of where her feelings leave her and the person she’s addressing.
The 23-year-old’s vocals are beautifully soft against the hypnotic sonic backdrop.
"24th street /Where you held me, grabbed my arm / What a mental fire alarm / Cause a lot of that felt wrong," Abrams reflects on the confusion and pain, as she sounds both regretful and emphatic. "Like I miss you/ But when I kissed you back, I lied/ You don't know how hard I tried/Had to fake the longest time."
The repetition of the phrase “where do we go now?”, creates a sense of quiet desperation for someone else to answer the question she doesn’t want to. It’s a helpless situation. The relationship has gotten stale, but where do you go from that? The answer is obvious but painful.
Directed by Gia Coppola, the video for “Where do we go now?” cycles through a series of beautifully composed shots capturing Abrams in various states of emotional unrest. Switching between black and white and soft, muted tones, the delicate visual embodies the song's uncertainty and uneasiness. The rapidly changing shots pull the audience into Abrams’ interior world and rollercoaster of emotions.
