Kid Sistr @ Mercury Lounge

Sabel

On December 28th, I closed out my 2022 concert year with Kid Sistr’s show at the Mercury Lounge in NYC.

Founded in college, the all-female trio consists of Sabel on guitar, Sara Keden on bass, and Rebecca Webster on drums. Their sound is a fusion of bubblegum pop, 2000s alt-rock, and 1980s new wave. Kid Sistr's name and debut single "Little Sister Song" came from the fact that all members are the oldest in their all-sister families.

The venue was filled with family, friends, and fans all showing up to support Kid Sistr. Coming in from the cold, coats were immediately shucked off and piled on the side couches. Nobody came to sit. We were prepared to move

Becca Webster

Throughout the performance, Kid Sistr dominates the stage. Sabel switches between rhythm guitar and busting out effortless guitar solos. Between songs, Sara chats and jokes with the crowd. Her enthusiasm is contagious and evident in her bass playing. Becca is a petite monster on the drums. Barely breaking a sweat, Becca is a machine on the drums. She doesn't bother with gimmicks but is all wrists and reactions. She is entirely at ease with the drums.

Together, the three create a visceral energy on stage as they strut, jump, and move around each other with practiced ease.

“Piper takes the train

Mary puts her lipstick on. She's praying for a midnight kiss."

Sara Keden

The crowd knows the songs and they are loud. Head-bopping and catchy, it’s difficult not to love the songs. Their indie rock pop sound turns into complete ear candy with lyrics that are touching, biting, and downright funny.

"Can you count it on your hands like he counts on you/To get him gluten-free pizza at Trader Joe’s/He doesn’t have celiac, he’s just an asshole/And his fabricated gluten-intolerance is just the tip of the iceberg, yeah!

The unreleased "X Tape" was on the setlist and I can confirm it is a banger. Be sure to follow Kid Sistr and stay tuned for its release.
