Sam Hunt Brings Nostalgia with “Start Nowhere”
I am a fake country fan. A couple of times a year, I enter a cowgirl phase and only listen to country songs. I don't know what triggers these phases, but when they hit, they hit hard.
Recently, I've been on a country kick with songs about summertime and beers filling my ears. At the top of my list lies Sam Hunt, a country artist who I've been listening to since his album Montevallo came out in 2014.
Hunt’s latest release is “Start Nowhere”, a stripped-down song that looks back at his childhood. "When I need to get back to who I am / There ain’t but just one road there / Sometimes you gotta start nowhere," Hunt reminisces about simpler times.
Hunt sings over an acoustic guitar throughout the track. The lyrics revolve around returning home to reconnect with one’s roots. The song details the story of a young man who leaves his town to see the world, but returns with a greater appreciation of where he’s from. "Me, I wanna go where the river rolls / And breathe in that old down home."
Hunt shared his feelings on social media about returning home.“When you grow up in a small town, you love where you’re from, you are where you’re from, and you answer the call of adventure when you turn 18 and take off out into the big wide world. If you stay gone too long without coming home, you can get a little disconnected. Sometimes the only way to get your feet back on the ground is to go back home where you grew up.” Hunt declared “That's what this song is about. Going home.”
The music video for the song is made up of footage from Hunt’s childhood in Cedartown, GA that develops the personal sentimentality of the song. The light-hearted moments featured in the video add to the nostalgic feel of the track and make me long for my childhood.
If you miss your childhood or are looking to get into country music, Sam Hunt’s “Start Nowhere” is the perfect place to start.
