The Beaches are back with “My People”
“My People” follows the theme of being young, dumb, and broke in a big city while keeping to The Beaches' alt rock sound with an enticing guitar riff, stirring bass line, and punchy drums.
It’s Getting Chilly: Fall Playlist
Fall is my favorite season for so many reasons. Cold weather, brisk winds, crunchy leaves… the list goes on and on. To kick off the season, I’ve compiled a list of songs that give off fall vibes.
Louis Tomlinson is back with “Better Than Me”
“Bigger Than Me” is a guitar driven rock-pop anthem that embraces change and personal growth. From stripped back verses to a punchy chorus, Tomlinson shows off his range in a way we haven’t heard before.
Annie DiRusso Delivers “Call It All Off”
The Nashville based artist just released “Call It All Off” on Wednesday and I cannot take it off repeat. Pop infused indie rock, DiRusso’s catchy sound sneaks up on you to get stuck in your head. An element that makes DiRusso so captivating is her vocal qualities. “Call It All Off '' perfectly demonstrates how DiRusso balances being gentle and powerful.
We’re Taking Seeing Double’s New Single: “Take It Or Leave It”
Seeing Double is back with their third single “Take It Or Leave It”. Breaking out earlier this year, the band grabbed people with their unique blend of ‘70s inspired grooves and modern indie sound. The Oneonta band’s previous two releases “Leah” and “Don’t Wait” accumulated over 2.5 million total streams and they show no sign of slowing down.
The Messy Honesty of “Becky’s So Hot”
Fletcher shared the story behind the song in an interview with Zane Lowe. "I wrote "Becky’s So Hot" a couple years ago after I was creeping on my ex’s new girlfriend’s Instagram while I was in the studio. I accidentally liked a picture of her wearing a vintage t-shirt of my ex’s, one that I’ve worn before. The complexities of moving on were something I wanted to explore, and it felt more interesting to me to write something from the perspective of being in in awe of her.”
lovelytheband Plays It Free
Lovelytheband roared onto the stage “loneliness for love” off their 2020 album Conversations With Myself. Compared to Sipper, these guys were loud! The stage presence was phenomenal. During multiple songs, frontman Mitchy Collins came down to run alongside the barricade. We had a nice little face to face second.
CDs: A Few Cents Makes Sense
Here’s the best part (besides hearing the band). We lucky few got to hear their new mixtape before it dropped. All of us got signed CDs of their mixtape and CD players were passed around and that helped kill the remaining few hours. You’re thinking "who even uses CDs anymore? "
HOW DO YOU LOVE SOMEBODY
Coming a long way from their first release in 2016, today, the group’s sound is more mature. “HOW DO YOU LOVE SOMEBODY” leans into the rocky side of pop than their previous more poppy tracks in the past. The music video even gives them an almost rock band aesthetic with a minimal color palette. The black and red aesthetic and lettering of the painted drum set brings back strong memories of old 5SOS, but the black and white dress code is very much in WDW style.
I Blame Finals...and the World
"I Blame The World" is Sasha Alex Sloan’s latest album and the perfect accompaniment for angsty feelings as you ponder your existence and all your life’s choices to date. Continuing on the same path she carved out on her previous album “Only Child”, Sloan keeps the same emotional feel to her music by writing songs that feel almost like diary entries. Lyrics demonstrate her vulnerability while soft vocals drive a sense of intimacy.
Lizzy McAlpine Doesn't Fall Flat with Five Seconds Flat
Releasing music since 2018, Lizzy McAlpine has blazed onto the scene. Her sophomore album Five Seconds Flat was released this past Friday and it is a masterpiece. There are four collaborations on this album including erase me ft. Jacob Collier, reckless driving ft. Ben Kessler, weird ft. Laura Elliot, and hate to be lame ft. FINNEAS. While McAlpine keeps consistent with her recognizable staples, she manages to change her sound each song to keep things fresh.
Fletcher, Fletcher, Fletcher
Plans have a funny way of shifting on you. A few of my friends like Fletcher’s music as well, so when tickets first went up, I purchased two with the idea that one of my friends would come with me. As time went on, excuses happened. School, work, not interested. So I sold my second ticket and prepared to fly solo for this concert (as I usually do). While I was prepared to be all by my lonesome amidst the couples, I saw that an old acquaintance of mine had scored a ticket the day before. I messaged her and boom! I had a concert buddy. The universe said one concert buddy is not enough! As luck would have it, we picked up another person in line. By the time I entered the doors of Webster Hall, I was part of a trio.
Gaslight, GATEKEEP, Girlboss
Gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss. The motto that propels me out of bed each morning. The motto that I strive to implement daily into my life. As I make my morning coffee, I think about the devious ways in which I will manipulate and gaslight people. Once, in an incredible turn of events, I gaslighted myself. True talent right there. I am obviously a girlboss through and through. Hello? Full time student, writer, and annoyance to everyone around me. That takes work to pull off.
Questions: Society's Obsession with Diminishing Women
The WIM event hands out awards to different artists, creators, producers, and executives for their work. 2022’s biggest honor, Woman of the Year, went to Olivia Rodrigo. Well deserved after releasing an incredible debut EP last year. The nineteen year old is clearly on her way to do great things, including playing a sold out tour this year.
Women In Music: Historical Trailblazers
While the sign on the boys clubhouse saying “No Girls Allowed” has long been stripped away, the sentiment is slow to follow. Sure, women can enter the club, but will we be granted acceptance? Working doubly hard for half the reward, it seems that we have to fight for the same privileges that men are granted.
Freezing Resale Pays Off: Gracie Abrams Concert
Finding tickets to see Gracie Abrams on 2/15/2022 was not an easy feat. Tickets had sold out the first day, but I was out there scouring the internet trying to find a good deal. Ideally, I would’ve gone to the Valentine’s Day show, but alas school schedules do not care about your concert plans.
Neil Young vs. Spotify
There's a specific type of person that we can't talk about our opinions with. Haters. There are two types of haters. The haters that simply don’t like something and move on with their lives and the Haters that seek to destroy the thing they hate or convert them to their beliefs. We all know people who can’t agree to disagree and try to force their beliefs onto you without listening to you. Neil Young seems to be a Hater... or is he? That's for you to decide.
Emo Kids Unite… Or Not?
Emo kids are coming out of retirement this week, thanks to the announcement of the We Were Young festival. The event is bringing together bands for a one night Warped Tour like festival. The 12 hour festival has headliners including My Chemical Romance, Paramore, ADTR, Avril Lavigne, and so many more. For former emo kids this is pop punk heaven… or is it hell?
Listening with Intention this New Year's
We as listeners can’t commit. We refuse to be in a committed relationship with anyone. We want to flirt with everything and everyone at the same time. We hook up with singles and leave them in the dust the next day. “Screw monogamy”, we shout as we curate our favorite singles into our carefully constructed playlists. “No exclusivity”, as we jump from The Beatles to Kanye West. “I think we should see other people” as we forget about our favorite artist of the week and chase someone new.
The Aces Came to Represent!
This tour was really special to me on a personal level because I absolutely love The Aces and I had been waiting for this for so long, but aside from my personal feelings, this tour was important in that it was an all female tour. The music industry in general is a very male dominated field and it often feels like women are pushed to the sidelines, forced to take different musical paths than desired, and not given the same amount of respect or attention as their male counterparts.
